SERVE Letter August 2021

As we enter August, we approach the busiest hurricane season of the year. Whenever possible, Brookstone sends out teams to help with disaster relief in situations like these. Just last year we sent several tree crews to clean the coast for a week because of serious storm damage. It is so important for us to serve in more than just our immediate community. We are called to be the hands and feet of Jesus in all walks of life. I love this quote from Teresa of Avila:

“Christ has no body now but yours. No hands, no feet on earth but yours.
Yours are the eyes through which he looks compassion on this world.
Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good.
Yours are the hands through which he blesses all the world.
Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are his body.
Christ has no body now on earth but yours.”

Smile-A-Mile is a local non-profit organization that started more than 35 years ago with just a single summer camp session for children in Alabama with cancer. The organization has grown to be a year-round program that serves children with cancer and their families. Through its charitable fundraising efforts, Smile-A-Mile will provide the necessary support to send kids with cancer to medically supervised cancer camps. At these camps, the children can have fun, build friendships, spend time in nature, make memories that will help them heal, and ultimately return home feeling renewed and filled with hope.

One of these fundraising events put on by Smile-A-Mile is their annual 5K and 1M Fun Run, hosted by the Junior Board of Directors, at Smile-A-Mile Place in downtown Birmingham!
